This project for a family relocating to this popular area of Geelong began as an exercise in efficiency and practicality while inspiring the reuse of an early 20th century house with a contemporary extension. The clients were keen to invest in a high performance building shell while keeping the internal fit-out simple, with its evolution to continue as the family does.

The program was to accommodate the growing family by addition of a new living and kitchen area with a lofted space, as well as another wing to be used as a studio for light sculpture projects and second living room initially, then as a guest accommodation in the future.

Forms are of simple pavilions reminiscent of the classic lean-to found in many similar properties, joined by a short link providing a private access to the southern wing. The east-west orientation of the block allowed both pavilions great views of the garden to the north and west, with ambitious plans for edible beds and shaded entertaining areas as it evolves.

The simple openings are designed to admit daylight all day to all new spaces with morning, midday and evening winter sun accessed at high level over the adjacent roofs. Cross-ventilation is also maintained to all spaces and a heat-reclamation system has been planned into the ceilings to maximise performance of the building in all seasons.
