The house provides for the next generation of dwelling on a narrow site in Port Melbourne. Replacing a dilapidated weatherboard workers cottage, the design seeks to maximise the opportunities of the site with a compact two storey design.

Within tight town planning constraints, living areas have been located on the upper floor to take advantage of roof-top aspects and a NE view to the city skyline. A rear NE deck that controls overlooking with a planter/BBQ box provides a sheltered outdoor living area making the most of northerly aspects and views.

The lower floor contains two bedrooms, bathroom, WC, laundry and a further flexible room at the front of the house.

The entry and stairwell are detailed as a fully glazed insertion, creating a sense of volume to the entry section of the narrow plan. The stair lands upstairs below a lowered central ceiling plane, from which living and dining room volumes open out.

The design maximises opportunities for winter solar gains while controlling summer sun with a carefully designed shading system that is erected as part of our fabric installation.

The adjoining buildings and diagonal aspect to north limits the ability of the lower floor to capture the winter sun, which along with poor soil conditions contributed to the building being built on a timber sub-floor - which we have naturally ensured is well insulated and sealed.
